The Nietzschean

The Nietzschean

The man ascended the steep steps of the temple. Not hastily, but in an energetic measured stride that would leave even the agoge-trained guards panting. If he hadn’t cut them down at the foot of the steps that is.

The intense glow of the burning city illuminated his fair skin and beautiful features. Each muscle chiseled by a master’ pick, each line carefully drawn by the hand of a divine artist. A lost son of Aphrodite, perhaps.

He found the Gerusia elders and high priests cowering in the corners of the main chamber. Frail of body and mind, unfit to rule, unfit to lead the chosen people into the next age. He extended an open hand.

“Begone, spawn of Hades!” snapped the bravest of the lot. “King Lysander Ares-born will have your head for this!”

“I think not.” said the Nietzschean. No anger, just a casual dismissiveness, like the one awarded children by their parents. “Is this him?”

Something landed on the ground with a heavy thud. A sack of gnashed bones, meat and bent armor. Some of the priests gasped in horror.

“Fear me not, for I do not come to you as a conqueror, but as a liberator. I will liberate you from your two-faced morality. I will burn away your weakness like I burned this city.”

“The gods...”, started one of the priests.

“The gods are dead and buried. They were not strong enough. Do not weep for them, for you are either the Blade or for the Blade. I am here to re-forge you. And I re-consecrate this temple to the mightiest of deities - Man, unshackled.”

“W-what will become of us...?”, asked another.

“I told you not to fear me, for I still have a use for you. A temple still needs a priest.” The Nietzschean opened his second hand to reveal a small stone knife. He casually tossed it between the old men. “Just one. Sort it out.”
